It Started With a Bad Night’s Sleep

Like most great ideas, Bamboo Haven was born not in a boardroom, but in the small hours of a sweltering summer night.

It was July 2022, and our founder, Gary Green, was lying awake at 3am in his London  home — tangled in cotton sheets that had turned hot and clammy, his eczema-prone skin itching and irritated. This was not a new experience. Gary had spent the better part of a decade cycling through bedding brands, thread counts, and fabric types in search of the sleep he so desperately needed. Premium Egyptian cotton. High-thread-count percale. Expensive ‘cooling’ synthetics that promised a revolution and delivered very little. Nothing solved the problem. Nothing came close.

As someone who had lived with eczema since childhood, Gary knew that the wrong bedding could be genuinely life-disrupting. Synthetic fibres aggravated his skin. Conventional cotton trapped heat and moisture. Even products marketed as hypoallergenic felt scratchy and stiff after a few washes. For millions of people across the UK — hot sleepers, allergy sufferers, those with sensitive skin, new parents running on fractured rest — the bedding industry simply was not delivering what it promised.

Then, in the autumn of 2022, everything changed. On a business trip to Japan, Gary checked into a small boutique hotel outside Kyoto. The sheets on the bed were unlike anything he had ever encountered. Impossibly soft — almost silky — cool to the touch, and yet somehow warm enough to feel gently cocooning. He slept deeply and without interruption for the first time in years. By morning, he had turned the pillow over to read the label. One word: bamboo.

He returned to the UK with a singular purpose: to understand everything there was to know about bamboo bedding, and to create a British luxury brand that would bring that experience to people who needed it most.

 

 

Three Years of Relentless Research

What followed was not a quick route to market. It was three years of deep research, rigorous fabric testing, and an uncompromising search for manufacturing partners who shared Bamboo Haven’s values.

Gary discovered quickly that the bamboo bedding market was murkier than it appeared. Many products labelled as ‘bamboo’ contained significant percentages of synthetic fibres. Thread count claims were often inflated or misleading. And critically, many of the chemical processes used to convert bamboo into fabric left traces of harmful substances that had no place next to the skin of a person with allergies or eczema.

The Bamboo Haven standard was built from scratch to address every one of these issues. Working with a carefully selected network of sustainable textile mills, Gary developed a 100% bamboo viscose construction with a genuine 300 thread count — which, due to bamboo’s uniquely long and fine fibres, delivers the softness and smoothness equivalent to a 1500 thread count Egyptian cotton. No blending. No shortcuts. No greenwashing.

Most importantly, every Bamboo Haven product was submitted for independent certification under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 — the internationally recognised benchmark that verifies a product is free from over 100 harmful substances. It is one of the most stringent textile safety certifications in the world, and it is non-negotiable for us. When you place your bedding against your skin for eight hours every night, you deserve to know exactly what is and is not in it.

In the autumn of 2025, after three years of development, the first Bamboo Haven collection launched online. Within six weeks, the debut range had sold out entirely.

 

Who We Are

Bamboo Haven is a British sleep wellness brand headquartered in London. We are a small, close-knit team of textile specialists, sleep researchers, sustainability advocates, and — above all — people who care deeply about the quality of rest our customers are getting every single night.

We do not operate warehouses full of generic stock. Every product in the Bamboo Haven collection has been personally developed, tested, and approved by our team before it reaches a customer’s door. We are hands-on at every stage of the process, from sourcing the raw bamboo viscose fabric and selecting our sustainably sourced wooden buttons through to the finishing of each product and the way it is packaged for delivery.

Our team includes qualified textile technologists with over two decades of industry experience, a sleep health consultant who advises on the physiological properties of our fabrics, and a sustainability lead who oversees our environmental commitments at every stage of production. When Bamboo Haven makes a claim about its products, it is not marketing copy — it is the informed, verified opinion of people who have spent years studying this material and its effects.

Bamboo is one of the most sustainable natural materials on Earth. It grows to full maturity in three to five years without pesticides or artificial irrigation, sequesters carbon at a higher rate than most trees, and regenerates naturally from its own root system without replanting. Our bedding is pure bamboo viscose with no synthetic fibre blending and no microplastic shedding — and our duvet covers and bedding sets are fastened with sustainably sourced wooden buttons. Our supply chain is audited regularly to ensure responsible sourcing, ethical manufacturing practices, and minimal environmental impact at every step. We will never compromise our environmental commitments for margin.
